Better Place battery switch in Tokyo

tokyo 967

Sitting in the back seat of a Better Place Taxi in Tokyo when it does a battery switch:

The car drives inside the switch station and gets cleaned underneath with air when it drives in. then it stops and after waiting a while the depleted battery is taken out underneath and then the fully charged battery lifted up. It is soon fitted into the car.

The whole battery switch is taking around two minutes and then we have a car that can run 100 km in the city of Tokyo.

This video is doing a bit of summary over my visit. The video is done at the airport and starts with a plane taking off:

It was a very convincing experience.

Honda CR-Z Hybrid

I just found this very positive test:

I have just got a chance to sit in it today at a dealer showroom.

crz4

The car is so small that it is possible to drive the front seats all the way back so there is no leg room for rear passengers. If you need to have kids in the back you are not comfortable in the front seats.

The dashboard are wide and some details are known from the Insight. The hybrid drive has 3 modes:

crz2

The trunk is relatively big:

I look forward to drive a hybrid with manual transmission

Until I get a chance to test it I will post some links to other tests:

Nissan Leaf first drive

Update 28´th May: Nissan fast charger in front of the Headquaters in Yokohama:

nissanfc

When I first started to studying electric vehicles two years ago I did not expect that family cars would start to come in the first 5 years, but now both Nissan Leaf and Renault Fluence are almost here.

leaf2

Today I had an opportunity to get a ride in a prototype of the Nissan Leaf. Because it was a prototype I was not allowed to drive myself. But I must say – being in the passenger seat was an amazing experience.

It has a 80 kW motor that gives a VERY powerful acceleration. The regeneration is only very little when you take the foot of the accelerator and it goes to maximum when you apply the brake. As I always say – I wish the regenerative braking was only controlled by the accelerator, like on the Tesla.

leaf1

The cabin has a nice size fitting 5 persons – it looks a bit wider that the Renault Fluence.

The trunk is a lot larger than the Renault Fluence.

The car will not be able to battery switch.

leaf3

Conclusion:

It is fantastic to test a family size car that has a powerful motor and is so fun to drive. Congratulation Nissan!!!

V2G: What is Standing in the Way of the New Networked Car

I recently interviewed Sales Director for Better place in Denmark Torben Andersen. He told me that Better Place will not be ready with the possibility for sending back power from their Vehicles to the Grid (V2G) when they start operating next year.

I was surprised to hear this because I thought that this is an important part of Better Places business model!

men at work

I just came across this article discussing the issue:

It’s a testament to how exciting and likely the idea of a networked car is that a panel full of experts at Green:Net chose to focus their attention on the trials, tribulations and pitfalls of the future of the automotive industry. No boosterism for us, thanks!

As the car becomes a platform, powered up with electricity and connected via networks, here’s what needs to happen, according to our panel of representatives from the electric car industry”:

Interview with Renault

I have recently signed up for a Renault Fluence Electric Vehicle and as #25 on the waiting list I arranged an interview with Soren Hyltoft from Renault Denmark to get answers for my many questions.

Fluence ZE 3-60

I also gave my group members at LinkedIn and Facebook a chance to ask questions I should pass on to Renault. This had an enormous interest but unfortunately it was not possible due to time to cover all your questions.

Questions regarding the cooperation between Renault and Better Place:

The first part of the interview was for me to understand the relationship between Renault and Better Place. In Denmark you buy the car from Renault and if you do not need to battery switch you can simply use the car as an “ordinary” EV by plugging it in. Renault expects to offer leasing possibility for both car and battery.

If you are living in Denmark and you wish to use the opportunity to battery switch you must buy the car form Renault and lease the battery form Better Place. Renault calls this battery switching for “Quick drop”, however they won´t establish “Quick drop” stations in Denmark understood you won´t be able to switch your battery unless you sign up with Better Place.

Better Place is starting up operation in Denmark as the only European country. In other European countries you cannot use the Fluence ability to switch batteries. Better Place will start operation in Israel in 2010 and in Denmark 2011.

We discussed how to charge it at night when you live in the city – Renault’s only solution is to battery switch!

The cars:

In 2011 Renault presents the Fluence ZE witch can battery switch. They also present the Kangoo ZE witch has a fixed battery. The Kangoo will only come as a van-model and not as a passenger car with back seats:

KangooZE

Last year I tested a pre-production model of the Fluence:

http://www.easyecar.com/electric-vehicle-test/test-of-renault-fluence-z-e/

Both cars will have electric heating and still Renault promises that they will
have at least 160 km (100 miles) range. I look forward to seeing if that
counts in winter times as well.

There are no prices on the cars yet. Renault expects that the price will
be the same or slightly lower than the equivalent of a similar Diesel car.
We have very high tax on Petrol/Diesel cars in Denmark and no tax on
Electric Vehicles, so it should be possible in Denmark. Many other
countries in Europe do not have high tax, so it will be very interesting
to see if Renault can keep the price on the same level as the Diesel car
here.

Both cars come with an option on normal charge and fast charging . And the Fluence as already mentionedcan Battery switch.

Renault introduced a family of 4 at Frankfurt Motor show:

ZE_family
In 2012 one more EV will hit the market – Renault Zoe ZE:

 Zoe_ZE

This car will also come with the possibility of battery switching.
Some of the questions asked in LinkedIn were more technical and I have
asked Soren if he can find someone at Renault to answer them. I will get
back with these answers ASAP I hear from him.

Better Place to work with Chery on electric cars

shai

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63N1GQ20100424

I am very glad about this announcement. At New Year I predicted that Better Place will announce two more partners in 2010 and that one was a Chinese:

http://www.easyecar.com/electric-vehicle-test/what-kind-of-news-will-better-place-break-in-2010/

I if my prediction will come through who will be the next? A German? VW, BMW or Daimler.
